Defeating common strategies: Runner spamming

This is a beginner level article, which means it is suitable for fluffy, clever, and low gifted.

If you are fluffy or clever league, you have probably encountered opponents that spawn tons of runners, and try to get your base slowly down to 0. This is known as runner spamming. To combat runner spamming, follow the following steps:

Step 1: Spawn soldiers, cover spawn/wits.

Keep spawning soldiers. Do NOT spawn a bunch of runners to kill their runners. If their runners are unhealed, you can throw in a few healed runners. Make sure the runners can't get on your spawn and kill your medics, and keep soldiers on your wit spaces. It's okay to let them hit your base a couple of times. Kill any runners that get on your side. Try to avoid spawning snipers, since they are easily killed.

Step 2: Blockade your base.

At this point they've probably hit your base a couple of times. This trade-off, runner for base health, should leave you stronger than them. If you're poised to win, jump straight to step 3. Otherwise, block off your base with a few soldiers, so that they can't hit it, and continue to build up an army. Save up a few wits to prepare to attack.

Step 3: Attack!

At this point your army should be much stronger than theirs. Just march your army of soldiers to their base and start massacring runners. It might take the army two turns to get there. Note that it's much easier for soldiers to kill runners than it is for runners to kill soldiers. If you followed these steps, you should have an easy win.

Some notes:

  • If a runner jumps up and damages one of your soldiers, then just kill the runner, and don't bother to heal the soldier. The trade is very wit-inefficient for them. More on wit efficiency in future blog posts.
  • It's fine to let them hit your base, but don't let it get too low.
  • Keep a couple of runners of your own for vision.
  • If your medic is killed, you may or may not want to spawn a new one.
