Why I'm Stuck in Clever

Hello!

A tiny little post today since I feel like I should post more.

I was playing this game against a person from school.  I felt really confident since I have been playing Outwitters for a year now. (My 1-year forum anniversary is next month <3) He has only been playing for a week or two.  In my confidence, I played Adorables (not my best) on Long Nine (also not my best)

I had this amazing mobisnipe play all set up, but I had a problem.  I hit the base with a soldier, moved my mobi, spawned a sniper, teleported my sniper, but then...ran out of wits.

Moral of the story: Count your wits guys!!!  I think that's the reason for my lack of success.

Now I have to face the ridicule at school tomorrow.  Wish me luck... *hides in corner or shame*

A Prickly Situation: How to face off with Veggienauts!

Hello everyone, Necrocat219 here! This article will be the first of a four-part series to cover each race in Outwitters. When I complete each article I’ll link them all up in one final article. Once you've read, feel free to comment or ask questions! I might be able to improve this guide with your feedback! J

To start things off, let’s summarise what the Bramble does best. To win, your aim should be to try to make wit-efficient trades so you can overpower your opponent. Thorns are great for killing 1hp units for few wits. Their other strength is to create a wall for your units, forcing your opponent to spend more wits than yourself.

However, as you may have found out, it also has some difficulties when facing soldiers and bombshells. Soldiers one shot thorns and the Bramble has very few options to approach and take out a Bombshell. Scallywags are especially a tough match-up.

The aim of this guide will be to optimise how you play Veggienauts and how to deal with each race individually. Be wary though that the match-up against Scallywags will be in their favour.

Quick & Easy Tips:

-          Don’t boost your Bramble. Place it where your opponent can’t get to it!

-          Don’t rush your Bramble. Save up wits instead and when you can kill a Medic or Sniper spawn your Bramble and take it out!

-          Spawning a thorn costs a simple 1 wit. Cover them with snipers, and it becomes very expensive for you opponent to take them out.

-          On the weak side of the map (Wit space but not spawn space) Use your thorns as blockades and have a few soldiers and snipers. This will let you attack your opponent’s weak spot without having to think about your opponents attack!

-          Use the above to stop Adorable from hit & run attacks with their Mobiwhale.

-          Against Scallywags, keep your thorns separate. A Bombshell has to attach your thorns two times, so for the 1 wit spent making it, they spent 1 wit taking it out.

-          If your opponent targeting a certain thorn, throw them off by boosting them to 3hp when they are just about to attack. Spawn a second medic to heal units hurt by the Bombshell.

-          If your opponent spawns lots of 3hp soldiers, spawning a few Heavies is a good idea. They pair up with thorns really well, making it tough for them to surround and kill it.

The Bramble, Soldiers and Snipers

The Bramble is a highly defensive unit even with its attack that can’t take your opponent on alone. Rushing one for the sake of using it is a bad idea. A major strength of the Bramble is that it can do a lot of work the same turn you spawn it. Your early game goal should be to save up wits so you can explode with the Bramble when the time is right. I personally feel safe between 12 and 15 wits.

The unit best paired is the soldier, and is very reliable without a special unit’s support, so making sure you spend your early game turns spawning soldiers is important. Each turn you will be receiving 6-7 wits and spending 3-4 wits on your soldiers, so this allows you to save up for a Bramble. Don’t be overly aggressive, but if your opponent makes a mistake remember to punish them for it.

If you feel you can safely spawn your Bramble, setting up a layer of thorns in front of your weak points or soldiers will make it wit inefficient for them to attack. Make sure that you spawn a sniper or two to support them though, if you cover the hex in front of the thorn that will prevent your opponent’s soldiers from taking them out.

Matchups

From here on, how you play depends on the race you’re against and the map. Against all 3 races be careful, if your opponent chooses not to spawn a special and you spawn a Bramble, it’s very easy to get overrun by soldiers.

Vs Adorables

Before you spawn your Bramble, be careful you can’t be overrun. If you spot your opponent’s Mobiwhale that is 7 wits they can’t use to rush you. You might want to spawn your soldiers to 4hp to survive sniper attacks. You could try spawning 3hp soldiers instead though; this will leave you with more wits and as the Bramble can take out snipers and runners easily may improve your matchup.

If your opponent is focussing on using soldiers with their Mobiwhale, make sure to cover your soldiers with thorns to completely stop hit and run attacks! Then, focus attacking on their weak side. This won’t lead to a straight up win, but if your opponent is really aggressive, they may waste a lot of wits trying to switch to be more defensive.

This replay demonstrates how I used thorns to defend the weaker side of the map. This allowed me to put pressure on his weak side and eventually win the game.

Vs Feedback

Feedback is the most aggressive race in Outwitters, so you have to be careful spawning your Bramble against them. Keep wits saved up so that if your opponent rushes you, you will be able to use your Bramble in a counter-attack. Spawn a runner in a safe position so that you can combine it with the Bramble to take out a Scrambler.

If your opponent doesn't rush you, you should set up a wall of thorns around your soldiers similar to against Adorables. This does two things: firstly if your opponent attacks you each thorn will eat up an attack, making it less effective. The other is that your main advantage is that you can reach as far as you want with the Bramble! If you can figure out where your opponent has placed their scrambler, you will be able to use 2 soldiers to take an enemy soldier out and use your ability to attack, retract, and attack again with your thorns to take them out.

Replay example: A Scrambler Rush is Thwarted!

Vs Scallywags

Scallywags are the toughest match-up you will face. Keep in mind that spawning a second medic is very useful to keep your defences healthy! Thanks to them often turtling, spawning a Bramble against them is safe on most maps. The first thing to know is how to take one out as this can be frustrating. You will need to be able to get into position to hit the Bombshell with a Soldier & two thorn attacks. This is only possible if you make use of snipers as well to take out soldiers surrounding it.

If you don’t face the opponent head on, a nice trick to use is to keep your thorns separate from each other and in splash range of a Bombshell. It costs you 1 wit to create & replace thorns, and 2 wit for a Bombshell to destroy it (2 attacks), so can prevent you from getting worn down.

A Conclusion…

That’s a summary of how I optimise Veggienauts when I play them. Hopefully you will have learnt something from this that will help you take out your enemies! Remember to comment on if you enjoyed this guide, and look forward to the next race, Feedback!

Hi everyone!
Legacy here making her first post to tell you guys about the new tournament she's hosting for lower-leaguers only!

....okay this third-person stuff is getting weird so, um, back to first person now!

I've been stuck in clever for almost a year!! I love competing with all of my forum friends in tournaments like Home Team Advantage, but I find myself easily squashed!!  It seems like everyone is a Super-Gifted-Master-Titan and all I do is lose.

If you can sympathize, come join the Battle of the Fluffies (and also Clevers) 3! (aka BOTFAAC).  It's for lower leaguers only and you get to start playing pretty soon after you sign up.  I hope you consider joining!

10 tips to get promoted from Fluffy League to Master League

Hello, it's Daniel Oztekin here!

I've just written this guide of things to help you improve your game, start racking up those wins and rise through the ranks! On my road to ranking 22nd in the world I've picked up pieces of advice I end up giving out again and again, and have compiled them all here for you! So here are ten things to improve your game... hope you enjoy!

1. Have a battle plan.

When you find out what map you are playing on think, what am I going to do on this map this time? Am I going to spawn and move a Bombshell into a really good position? Be devious and sneak a Scrambler to destroy my opponents army? Make sure to take your turns and move units to fit in with your plan. Move your units to fit your plan and keep an eye on your weak spots with runners.

2. Don't play every game the same, react to your opponents choices

Before you go to war with your opponent, you need to make sure to see how you can break their defences and survive the counter attack. Are they spawning a lot of runners? A set of soldiers should let you kill them easily. A lot of 3hp soldiers? Spawn an extra heavy or a sniper, that will do the trick. Take your time each turn, you have as much as you want.

3. Avoid wasting wits

Before you makes your moves, think! Do you really want your unit there? Players will move the same units multiple times very often, and this uses up precious wits. In Outwitters the players that uses their wits best wins! Think where you want your runners and soldiers before placing them. Units are very cheap to spawn anyway, so instead of adjusting your unit, you could just spawn another instead.

4. Don't move runners twice

This is an easy way to improve your game. With how far runners can move, you should be able to place it wherever you want it first time without having to move it again. Think on each map where it will be able to show most of your opponents army, if it will reveal what units they are spawning. It costs 2 wits to create one, moving it again is half of what it cost you!

5. Spawn more soldiers than runners

Runners are in the game to provide plenty of vision across the battlefield. They are not designed to fight your wars for you and are as weak as they are cheap. Soldiers may move a bit slower, but spawn a few and there isn't any chance for runners to get past them!

6. Boost your soldiers

Are you struggling with enemies that spawn lots of runners? Then spawning soldiers and boosting them to 4 health will solve that problem. Spawning lots of bulky soldiers to block your base and your wit spaces will waste your opponent’s runners. It will take two runners and soldier 7 wits to kill your soldier when it costs you just 3 wits to spawn one!

7. Don't hit the base with your runner

Everyone has done this. Everyone still does this. Even Super Titans. I tell them to stop it, it's a bad habit, like smoking. Getting that runner to your opponents base hitting it for 1 damage is very tempting indeed. This costs 4 wits in total. 4 wits that could be used to take out an opponents soldier or spawn a unit. If you go against someone who does this, that’s 4 wits you’re better off than them! Don't do it. Hitting the base is bad for your health.

8. Avoid your opponents spawn space

A good rule of thumb is to avoid your opponents spawn spaces where possible. All maps are designed so that you will never be forced to do so. It will cost you quite a bit to move your units there, only for your opponent to spawn soldiers and snipers and murder your units cheaply. Instead you should focus wit spaces and bases.

9. Take advantage of 'The Fog of War'

The fog of war is the name of areas of the map you can't see. You can see your opponent is moving in it when you see the sneaky symbol in the corner. You should take advantage of this and make things difficult for your opponent! Block your opponents vision with your units and create a space that you can take actions your opponents can't see.

10. Secretly spawn snipers and special units

Following the above point, you should use your spaces hidden from the opponent to create an arsenal of weapons! You could spawn a few snipers to attack the opponent safely, spawn a bombshell to harass the opponent with or demolish the opponent with a scrambler. Anything goes really, the point is to leave your opponent guessing. Be imaginative!

Defeating common strategies: Runner spamming

This is a beginner level article, which means it is suitable for fluffy, clever, and low gifted.

If you are fluffy or clever league, you have probably encountered opponents that spawn tons of runners, and try to get your base slowly down to 0. This is known as runner spamming. To combat runner spamming, follow the following steps:

Step 1: Spawn soldiers, cover spawn/wits.

Keep spawning soldiers. Do NOT spawn a bunch of runners to kill their runners. If their runners are unhealed, you can throw in a few healed runners. Make sure the runners can't get on your spawn and kill your medics, and keep soldiers on your wit spaces. It's okay to let them hit your base a couple of times. Kill any runners that get on your side. Try to avoid spawning snipers, since they are easily killed.

Step 2: Blockade your base.

At this point they've probably hit your base a couple of times. This trade-off, runner for base health, should leave you stronger than them. If you're poised to win, jump straight to step 3. Otherwise, block off your base with a few soldiers, so that they can't hit it, and continue to build up an army. Save up a few wits to prepare to attack.

Step 3: Attack!

At this point your army should be much stronger than theirs. Just march your army of soldiers to their base and start massacring runners. It might take the army two turns to get there. Note that it's much easier for soldiers to kill runners than it is for runners to kill soldiers. If you followed these steps, you should have an easy win.

Some notes:

  • If a runner jumps up and damages one of your soldiers, then just kill the runner, and don't bother to heal the soldier. The trade is very wit-inefficient for them. More on wit efficiency in future blog posts.
  • It's fine to let them hit your base, but don't let it get too low.
  • Keep a couple of runners of your own for vision.
  • If your medic is killed, you may or may not want to spawn a new one.
If you have any comments or suggestions for improvement, comment below.
